A Pledge to One Another

Q: Is separation supposed to be the norm?
A: No, we’ve drifted from notions of covenant and “death do us part”

I was shocked the other day by this sentence out of America’s founding document:

“And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”

The Declaration of Independence 

It sounds so foreign to pledge anything to another person. A cause, maybe, but we’re surrounded by so much separation that to pledge your life, fortune, and honor to a group of people is unheard of. 

Church’s split, spouses divorce, families get divided, friends move away. Separation happens all the time. 

But perhaps it doesn’t have to. 
Maybe we can be inspired by heroes of old and remember forgotten notions like honor, pledge, and providence
